Company description:: Bellevue, Washington — January 13, 2004— Serengeti Law today announced that it supports the efforts of the LEDES Oversight Committee and LITIG to create a new international legal e-billing standard. Serengeti Law has proposed the creation of a new standard called LEDES 1998B-I (for international) which accepts modified fields requested by LITIG to facilitate international transactions, without adding new fields to the widely accepted LEDES 1998B standard, thereby ensuring a smooth transition for international firms.
Under the Serengeti proposal, this new international standard would leave intact LEDES 1998B, which is the standard currently being used by thousands of law firms, time and billing vendors, and e-billing vendors in the United States. Serengeti has suggested the creation of a separate international standard so that the large domestic installed base of firms which are not involved in international legal work would not be required to undertake an unnecessary upgrade of their systems (which are successfully using LEDES 1998B). The full Serengeti proposal will be posted on the website of the LEDES Oversight Committee: www.LEDES.org.
Serengeti Tracker is one of the most widely used electronic billing and matter management systems in the legal profession, and strictly adheres to the LEDES standard (not requiring any modifications by law firms to submit e-bills). Currently, more than 4,000 law firms in over 100 countries are handling legal work on Serengeti Tracker, involving more than 2,000 in-house clients worldwide. The Serengeti Tracker system processes international legal bills in more than 150 different currencies, including user-selected currency conversions for bill review and reports.
“We believe that the rapid acceptance of Serengeti Tracker by the legal profession is due in large part to our compliance with the LEDES 1998B standard,” said Tom Melling, Serengeti’s Vice President of Product Development. “Although firms around the world are currently using Tracker, we welcome the creation of a new LEDES international standard, while preserving the domestic system that has worked so well.”
The Serengeti proposal and other proposals will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the LEDES Oversight Committee on February 3, 2004 in New York City. Serengeti Law also supports the reorganization of the LEDES Oversight Committee, so that it has the legal authority to make decisions regarding legal e-billing standards. Any questions about the Serengeti proposal may be addressed to Tom Melling at Serengeti Law. Any questions regarding the LEDES Oversight Committee should be addressed to Rob Thomas at Serengeti Law, who is the Secretary of the LEDES Oversight Committee. .
